| Tour of Firefighting Academy |
On 11/8/11, 17 members and candidates of the Central Massachusetts CPCU Chapter toured the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow, MA. The MFA provides training to paid and volunteer fire service personnel at no cost to the cities and towns. It also trains gas company employees to fight LNG and propane fires. The arrangements for the tour were coordinated by Kenneth Clark of Acadia Insurance. The tour was led by Bruce Gauvin, the Academy's Recruit Coordinator.
During the tour of the state-of-the-art facility, participants watched student firefighters extinguishing fires in the Burn Building, practicing unsupported ladder lifts and climbs, and learning how to check a downed firefighter's condition and remaining air supply. Mr . Gauvin also showed them the gas fire training area and explained the process of "double-pumping", in which water is pumped from a hydrant into one fire truck and then through a hose into one or more other fire trucks. Using this method, water can be transported several miles to unprotected areas.
The participants would like to thank Mr. Clark and Mr. Gauvin for giving them the opportunity to take this very educational tour of the MFA.
